Chapters 1 & 2

Bishop Schuerman explains that Chapter 1 – “A Few Essential Words” establishes that loving the poor is the same as loving God while Chapter 2 – “God Chooses the Poor” provides the biblical background of the Church’s concern for the poor.

Chapters 4 & 5

Bishop Schuerman explains that Chapter 4 – “A History that Continues” covers the Catholic social teaching regarding care for the poor, developed from the Fathers of the Church up through Leo’s papal predecessors. Chapter 5 – “A Constant Challenge” tasks the faithful to understand the poor are an essential part of the Body of Christ, thus our responsibility and challenge to love and ensure due care.

Chapter 3

Bishop Schuerman reviews Chapter 3 – “A Church for the Poor” which covers the Church’s history of service to the poor through the actions of the saints. Each saint mentioned demonstrated their love of God in serving the poor, rising to overcome the evolving societal challenges facing the poor, and thus, the Church. These examples of faith to God and service to the poor encourage and motivate each of us to go out and do likewise today.
