Call to Action – Defending National Service
Last month, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced substantial cuts to AmeriCorps. Countless Catholic agencies rely on AmeriCorps funding to engage young people in encounter and service with communities at the social and economic margins, building bonds of solidarity, forming mission-minded leaders, and witnessing the love and compassion of God in society.
As USCMA member organization Catholic Volunteer Network (CVN) notes in a statement on this pressing issue, “In an increasingly divided and uncertain world, service programs like AmeriCorps are more important than ever. Service is not merely an act of charity — it is an act of hope. It represents the deep belief that transformation is possible when people come together across differences to respond to urgent needs and lift up communities.”
