Our planning team includes Maryknoller James H. Kroeger, who served for over five decades in Asia, mostly in the Philippines where he volunteered to work with farmers but instead became a leader in formation and missiology who has authored many books and articles. He participated as a member of the theological commission for the 51st International Eucharistic Congress held in the Philipine city of Cebu in 2016, which also focused on the Eucharist and mission with the theme “Christ in You, the Hope of Glory. The Eucharist: Source and Goal of Mission.” Shortly after that event, Fr. Jim wrote an overview article which provides many profound insights about the connections between Eucharist and mission. Just a few extracts include:
This encounter with Christ in the Eucharist can be a source of hope for the world when, transformed through the power of the Holy Spirit into the likeness of Him whom we encounter, we set out on a mission to transform the world with our zeal to bring to those who need most the same acceptance, forgiveness, healing, love, and wholeness that we ourselves received and experienced. (from the Basic Text for the congress)
Personal encounter with the Lord occurs in the Eucharist; and, this is precisely the personal encounter with the Lord that strengthens the mission contained in the Eucharist. Yes, Eucharist leads us to mission …. (from the homily of Charles Maung Cardinal Bo from Myanmar, papal legate to the congress)
The Eucharist responds to the “throw-away culture” with the culture of gift. You never throw away important gifts, bread and wine, gifts of God, gifts of the earth, and gifts of human hands will become the gift of Jesus’ presence, a gift of presence… (from the presentation “The Eucharist and the Dialogue With Cultures” by Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle)
Join Fr. Jim, our new executive director Kevin Foy, board president Antoinette Mensah and many other USCMA members this October! We look forward to seeing you.
USCMA strives to build connections between missionary leaders. Our conference is an opportunity to listen, share, and pray together as faith leaders.
